What is Lake Pulse?

Lake Pulse is a platform — centered around the Portal — that gives homeowners, associations, businesses, and the broader community of stakeholders the ability to more effectively manage the health and safety of the lake they all care about. Think of it as the chart for your lake: measurements collected by place and season, historical data brought forward, and analysis that turns all of it into decisions your neighbors, board, and agency will take seriously.

What is telehealth, and what does it have to do with a lake?

Telehealth uses digital tools — apps, video calls, remote monitoring — to deliver care and expertise from a distance. Those same tools now work for lake health & safety. By combining in-situ sensors, remote sensing, lab testing, and expert support, the people who care for a lake — professionals or concerned residents — can track and improve conditions without being on site full time. In essence, it's telehealth for your lake: expert insight and faster intervention from anywhere.

Why does Lake Pulse exist?

Most lakes in the U.S. lack up-to-date or consistent health and safety data. Lake Pulse was created to help communities close that gap by making it easier to collect data, manage it in the Portal, and understand what it means. The Toolbox provides a menu of mostly DIY solutions that support sampling, automate analysis, and simplify sharing with neighbors, associations, and agencies. The goal is lake management that is more informed, transparent, and proactive.

Does Lake Pulse sell treatment or remediation?

Accepted Answer

No. Lake Pulse does not sell treatment, control, or remediation solutions of any kind — no herbicides, no algaecides, no aeration systems, no weed harvesting. What we sell is a menu of data management, reporting, and testing & monitoring options that help you understand your lake's health and safety. When action is warranted, you decide what to do and who to hire; our job is to make sure that decision is based on evidence.

Who is Lake Pulse for?

Anyone who recognizes the role state agencies and consultants play — and also sees the important role everyone else plays in caring for their lake. Lake Pulse unlocks lake-centric community science in a way that hasn't been done before.

Question 6

How can Lake Pulse help me?

Accepted Answer

The Portal organizes and shares your lake data, including historical data, external data from APIs, and anything new collected with Lake Pulse tools. The App keeps your community informed and lets them participate through FieldNotes and Field Images, plus lake status, alerts, and project updates. The Toolbox offers testing and monitoring options for gathering high-quality data across your lake. The Boathouse is our support center — Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can ask for guidance any time.

Question 7

How can Lake Pulse help manage our lake's weed problem?

Accepted Answer

We don't sell weed control, and we won't pretend one product fixes aquatic vegetation. What we do is help you document the problem well enough that whatever you spend next is aimed correctly — and keep that evidence in your Portal. That usually means mapping where the weeds actually are, tracking cover and clarity by location and season, pulling in past survey reports, and holding it all in one Portal timeline. When you hire a contractor or apply for a permit or grant, that timeline is what makes your case — and what tells you afterward whether the treatment worked. Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can bring the question to the Boathouse before spending a dollar.

Question 8

Is Lake Pulse available in Canada?

Accepted Answer

Not yet. Lake Pulse currently serves lakes in the United States, and we plan to launch in Canada in 2027. Canada has already done serious groundwork. The NSERC Canadian Lake Pulse Network sampled lakes across the country from 2017 to 2019 to answer a question no one had tackled systematically: how healthy are Canadian lakes? The result is one of the country's most valuable lake health & safety datasets, part of which remains openly available through DataStream. That research network concluded in 2023. Their work established the science and the baseline. Ours is the operating platform that keeps that kind of insight in the hands of lake associations, municipalities, and property owners year after year. We look forward to bringing it to Canadian lakes in 2027.

Question 9

Will Lake Pulse fix my lake's impairment?

No. Nutrient loading, invasives, failing septics, and shoreline runoff are multi-year watershed problems, and no single vendor solves them. A lake is also not one patient. The water near a busy boat landing and a cove seventeen miles away can be in completely different condition. We measure by place and season rather than issuing one grade — and we put your community in a position to solve the problems with evidence in hand.

My lake isn't listed.

Accepted Answer

Send us the name and the nearest town and we'll add it. Small, private, and unnamed waterbodies get added regularly.

There's no data for my lake.

Accepted Answer

Common, and worth knowing — an empty timeline is itself a finding. But often the data does exist: gathering dust in a binder, or in a folder called “lake reports” on someone's computer. Lake Pulse helps you get that up to the cloud and into your lake's file, where it's far more useful for seeing trends.

Question 12

How do we get historic data into our Lake Pulse account?

Historic data migration is available to Plus and Lake Admin subscribers. If you have past lake reports, spreadsheets, logger exports, or even handwritten timelines, we can help bring them into your lake's timeline so your timeline starts in the past, not today. Every collection is different, so the best first step is to book a call with the Boathouse. We'll discuss what you have, what shape it's in, and what a clean import would look like for your lake.

Question 13

My lake already has an admin.

Accepted Answer

Good news. Lakes are shared, and so is the timeline. Join it — every subscriber at a lake can see the data others contribute there. And if you believe you should realistically be the admin — say you're the head of the lake association — reach out and we can help get things sorted.

Question 14

Can I join more than one lake?

Accepted Answer

No — a subscription covers one lake. The timeline stays honest when the people in it actually watch that water. Genuine exceptions exist (summer place in Wisconsin, winter place in Florida): contact us and we'll handle it. If you're tracking 5, 50, or 500 lakes, that's Lake Pulse PRO.

Question 15

What is a Lake Admin, exactly?

One person per lake who keeps the timeline straight: the lake profile, where and when it gets measured, the contributors, and what gets reported out to a board or agency. Not an owner, and not necessarily a scientist. By default, Lake Pulse is the Lake Admin for every lake in our database of 500k+ lakes. Once someone takes the role, Lake Pulse takes a back seat — it's your lake, you manage it. Our terms of participation cover the policies and guidelines for the role.

Question 16

What is the Portal, and what can I do there?

The Portal is the web home for your lake. It's where your dashboard, lake map, Lake Health & Safety Snapshot, data sources, analytics, event history, current and past programs, neighbor subscriptions, Field Images, Field Notes, and Boathouse access all live. You can also manage sampling locations, review weather on the lake, browse a library of health & safety parameters, and see updates from your Lake Admin — including alerts pushed by email and text.

Question 17

What's the difference between the Portal and the app?

They're the same timeline, but built for different moments. The app is for the field: capture a photo, log a note, or check a reading while you're on the dock or in the boat. The Portal is the desk: bigger screen, deeper analysis, exports for board packets, multi-year trends, and the full map. Anything captured in the app appears in the Portal; anything organized in the Portal shows up in the app.

What does my subscription tier unlock in the Portal?

Member (free) gives you a read-only view of your lake's status, news, and activities. Basic lets you upload Field Images and contribute to Field Notes and discussions. Plus unlocks synced Toolbox data, trends, exports, and the Boathouse. Lake Admin and PRO add program management, location controls, deeper analytics, and administrative tools for the lake timeline. Can I access old reports, studies, and maps in the Portal?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Data Sources repository is designed for exactly that: old lab data, studies, surveys, maps, and images in one searchable place, linked to the sites and dates they describe. Historic data migration is available to Plus and Lake Admin subscribers. If you have binders, spreadsheets, or PDFs, the Boathouse can help bring them into your lake's timeline.

How do alerts work in the Portal?

When your Lake Admin marks an alert as required, it appears prominently in the Portal and is pushed to subscribers by email and text — so the right people see it whether they're at their desk or on the dock. Alerts can cover anything from a suspected bloom or fish kill to a program update or permit deadline. The alert history also lives in the Portal, so you can see what was communicated and when.

What are the subscription levels?

Member is free. Basic, Plus, and Lake Admin are paid subscriptions that add data sources, syncing, analytics, and Boathouse access. Full details live on the Subscriptions page.

Question 22

What's the main difference between Member (Free) and Basic ($12 per year)?

Accepted Answer

Basic allows you to upload photos and comment on other people's, plus you can contribute to field notes — posing questions to the community or commenting on others. Think of Member as read-only.

What's the difference between Basic and Plus?

Accepted Answer

Basic organizes existing data. Plus connects new testing and monitoring data as it comes in, with trends, exports, and the Boathouse.

Question 24

What does 'per lake' mean?

Accepted Answer

One subscription covers one lake. If you have two homes on two lakes, contact us. If you follow 5, 50, or 500 lakes, that's Lake Pulse PRO.

Question 25

Can I turn my subscription off for the winter?

Accepted Answer

No — this is an annual subscription. We encourage subscribers to use the winter months to ingest historic data and recruit more neighbors onto the platform.

Question 26

Which level is right for me?

Accepted Answer

Just bought a place on the lake? Start as a Member — free, and you'll learn the vocabulary before you spend anything. Association arguing about whether it's getting worse? Basic. Pull the existing timeline together first. About to sample the water yourself? Plus — without it, Toolbox results don't sync into your lake's data sources. Writing a grant or answering to a board? Lake Admin. Someone has to own the timeline, and it should be one person.

Question 27

Is the Boathouse a consultancy?

No. It is a help desk staffed by people who know lakes. We answer questions, orient you, and hand you off well. We do not take on lake management engagements, sign off on regulatory filings, or act as your engineer of record.

What does Boathouse access cost?

Accepted Answer

Ask-anything access is included with Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscriptions. Project work — data migration, custom reporting, sampling design — is quoted as a flat fee before anything starts. You will never receive a surprise invoice for asking a question.

What exactly is included versus quoted as a fee?

Included with Boathouse access: answers about your data and results; guidance on which Toolbox products fit your lake, budget, and season; pointers to grants and funding sources; referrals into our network of limnologists and engineers; and plain-English explanations you can forward to your board. Quoted as a flat fee before work begins: historic data migration (decades of PDFs, binders, and spreadsheets digitized and loaded), custom reporting and multi-year analysis built to your specification, site-by-site sampling design, and facilitated expert engagements where a specialist bills their own rate. Every engagement is scoped and priced before work begins. No hourly billing, no retainers, no surprise invoices.

How fast will I hear back from the Boathouse?

Most questions get a same-or-next-business-day reply. Urgent conditions — a suspected bloom, a fish kill, a closure notice — go to the front of the queue.

Can the Boathouse fix my lake's impairment?

Accepted Answer

No, and neither can any single vendor. Nutrient loading, invasives, failing septics, and shoreline runoff are multi-year watershed problems. Our job is to get your community into a position to solve them: evidence in hand, priorities in order, and a timeline credible enough to win a grant or change a vote.

Can Members or Basic subscribers use the Boathouse?

The Boathouse is included with Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscriptions. Members and Basic subscribers can still ask Lake Pulse for help through Contact, but responses are less comprehensive.

Question 33

Which aisle should I start with?

Accepted Answer

Pick by the question you're trying to answer. “Is my water safe and clean right now?” — Lab Testing for defensible numbers, Field Testing for the weekly read. “What's happening when I'm not there?” — Real-Time Monitoring for continuous data, Satellite for the whole basin. “I have data — now what?” — Data & Services to clean, trend, and translate it for your board. If you'd rather not guess, ask Lake Pulse before spending.

I have old data but no gear. Is that worth anything?

Very much so. Decades of clipboard readings and old lab data still count, and we'll import them so your timeline starts in the past rather than today.

What if I want to speak to someone?

We want to speak to you too. Contact us with any question, concern, or feedback and we'll get back to you within 24 hours. Inquiries sent on Fridays are usually answered the following Monday, sometimes sooner.

Question 36

Can I use the Toolbox without a subscription?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but the data produced by whatever testing or monitoring solution you buy will not sync with your lake's Portal. You need a Plus, Lake Admin, or PRO subscription to sync your purchase — and the data it produces — with your Data Sources, which only subscribers can access.

Is there a freemium version?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Join your lake as a Member — our free tier — and you get access to your lake's web-based Portal and the Lake Pulse app. Member is free forever, no card required.

Question 38

What am I missing out on if I stay on the free Member tier?

Accepted Answer

A Member account helps you keep tabs on your lake's health and safety status, news, and activities — a good option if you simply want to stay up to date. Subscribers go further: syncing Toolbox data into your lake's Data Sources, trajectory and trend analysis, exportable timelines for grants and boards, and the Boathouse help desk for Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO.

I already have a buoy or logger. Can I connect it?

Usually, yes. If your lake already has a buoy, dock station, or logger — from us or from anyone else — it doesn't have to keep writing to a spreadsheet nobody opens. Tell us what you're running and we'll work on getting its readings flowing into your lake's timeline.

Can I cancel my order?

Accepted Answer

We completely get it, we change our minds too. Once an order is placed we're unable to alter or cancel it at this time; we hope to add a cancellation window in the future. If the item doesn't work out, exchange it or return it for a refund. Domestic return shipping is free.

How long will it take to receive my order?

Standard shipping normally takes 3–5 days. Next-day shipping is available on all orders for an additional charge. International shipping times depend on the products and destination, and are estimated at checkout.

Items must be returned within 30 days of receiving your order, in the same condition they arrived — unused, tags attached, and with all original packaging.

Place before precision: a modest measurement in the right cove beats a perfect one taken where nothing changes. Repeat beats one-off: a single reading is trivia; the same reading, same spot, three seasons running, is evidence. Gaps are findings: where nothing has been measured is often the most useful thing to report to a board. Start with what you already have — old lab sheets and agency data often contain the most useful trend line you'll ever get — and match the tool to the decision, because the cheapest kit is the one that answers the question your board is actually asking.

Who owns lake water in the U.S.?

Ownership of lake water is typically held in the public trust by state governments, which regulate its use through permitting. Navigable lakes are generally state-owned; non-navigable lakes can sometimes be privately owned, especially when entirely surrounded by private land. The federal government manages lakes on national lands but usually defers to state water law unless special federal or tribal rights apply. Overall, lake water is a shared resource shaped by geography, law, and purpose.

Can I ever have a 100% complete picture of my lake?

No — much like human health, you can invest heavily in tests and scans and still miss early signs of a serious condition. Lake health & safety requires both proactive monitoring and smart interpretation. With Lake Pulse you can generate as much data as you need, bring in historical data, and analyze it all in one place — enough to maintain health & safety, or accelerate restoration, with far more confidence.

Who owns my data?

Accepted Answer

You retain ownership of any data you generate using the Lake Pulse Toolbox, with a few caveats. Portions of the data available on your lake may come from public, taxpayer-funded databases or publicly accessible websites, including watershed associations, nonprofits, and conservation groups. Neither you nor Lake Pulse can legally own that data. Any paying subscriber associated with your lake can access data produced by other subscribers at that lake, and vice versa. There is no option to restrict that sharing within your lake's Portal. If you choose not to renew — or if Lake Pulse ever discontinues operations — you can still download and keep every piece of data you generated through the platform.

What happens to my data if I stop?

Your data stays yours. You can download everything you generated, and your lake's shared timeline remains visible to the community.

Question 50

How do I cancel or modify my subscription?

Accepted Answer

Email us or use the account settings in your Portal. Annual subscriptions renew automatically each year on your original billing date unless you cancel before that date. Changes take effect at the next renewal — your current subscription level stays active through the end of the current billing year. Nothing here is a one-way door, and there are no hidden fees or guilt trips.

Yes. We help you map and track nuisance and invasive aquatic plants — where they are, how fast they're spreading, and how they respond to treatment. That timeline turns a complaint into a defensible management plan.

Accepted Answer

Yes. We help you monitor the conditions that drive blooms — nutrients, clarity, temperature — so you can anticipate them, document their severity, and show whether interventions are reducing them.

Accepted Answer

Yes. Phosphorus and nitrogen from lawns, septic systems, agriculture, and shoreline erosion are the root cause behind most weed and bloom problems. We help you monitor inflows and in-lake nutrient levels so you can target the fixes that matter.

No — Lake Pulse is built lake by lake. Each subscription covers one lake, and the platform is designed to give the people who care about that specific waterbody the data and data-keeping tools they need. That said, individual lake timelines become valuable building blocks for larger efforts. We work with regional associations, conservation districts, and state agencies to support watershed-level initiatives by making consistent, place-based data available where it can inform broader planning.

Do you offer non-profit pricing?

Yes — 501(c)(3) and (c)(6) organizations qualify. We work closely with non-profits to stretch every donated dollar, because we'd rather your budget go into water than into invoices.

Question 59

Our monitoring budget only covers a handful of lakes. Can you actually change that math?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Lake Pulse brings testing and monitoring in at price points that didn't exist before, which is the difference between covering 5 lakes in your watershed and covering 50. Same grant, an order of magnitude more coverage.

Question 60

What about lakes in low-income or disadvantaged counties?

Accepted Answer

Lake management has historically been expensive enough that only wealthy shorelines could afford it, and we exist specifically to break that. Every lake gets a free portal regardless of the tax base around it, and paid tiers are priced so an under-resourced community isn't shut out.

We have thirty years of monitoring reports sitting in PDFs. Can Lake Pulse use them?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the free Data Extraction Engine converts static lake documents into CSV, and Boathouse handles bulk upload and organization. That legacy record becomes searchable data instead of a filing cabinet.

Question 62

Can you tell us whether invasives are present?

Accepted Answer

Yes — an eDNA snapshot samples multiple points on a lake and returns fauna and flora tables plus an explicit invasive-species check. Results come back as a plain-language report, not a raw sequence dump.
