Overview

Most lakes are sampled a few days a year. Nutrients move every week. SeasonCheck pairs a handheld nitrogen meter you use at the dock every week with five accredited lab tests timed to your lake's year, from ice-out to fall turnover.

The NS2 NOxAqua™ handheld reads ammonium, nitrite and nitrate from a single drop of water in about three minutes. The lab tests add phosphorus and chlorophyll a, the measures state programs use to assess lake condition, at the points in the season where they matter most.

Two versions: April–November for most U.S. lakes, and Year-round for South Florida and other lakes with a 12-month growing season. One price, everything listed included. No call required.

Designed for lakes and ponds. Not intended for rivers or aquaculture systems.

What problem does this solve for our lake?

  • Scheduled lab sampling sees your lake on four or five days a year. Nitrogen pulses arrive after storms, at inflows, and at turnover, and are usually gone before the next lab date. Most lake communities learn about a nutrient problem only once the water turns green.
  • SeasonCheck closes that gap. Weekly handheld readings show when nitrogen moves; the lab tests anchor the season with phosphorus, chlorophyll a and a full nitrogen panel at the points that define your lake's year. The result is one dated, continuous record for the season instead of a handful of snapshots.

What's not included

  • Phosphorus or chlorophyll a from the handheld. It measures nitrogen forms only; phosphorus and chlorophyll a come from the lab tests
  • Algal toxin testing. The bloom voucher identifies the algae; it does not measure toxins. Add the Microcystin (Cyanotoxin) Test if a bloom is near swimming areas
  • Dissolved oxygen, temperature profiles or clarity readings
  • Sample collection. You collect all samples
  • A Boathouse call. Add the $50, 30-minute Boathouse call at checkout for help choosing sites or reading results
  • Use on rivers or aquaculture systems

Requirements

  • Access to the same spot on the lake each week (a dock works), plus your main inflow if you want storm readings
  • A smartphone with the NOxAqua app for handheld readings
  • Ability to ship each lab kit back within the holding time printed on the kit
  • Lab results and uploaded handheld readings in the lake portal require a Plus or Lake Admin subscription; Member and Basic subscribers receive lab results by email
  • Questions before you buy? Contact the Lake Pulse Boathouse.
What you get back

Results

  • Handheld: ammonium, nitrite and nitrate readings in about 3 minutes per test, recorded in the NOxAqua app with time and location stamps. Download them from the app and upload to your lake portal, where they sit alongside your lab results in the Data Library.
  • Lab: each kit returns a signed laboratory report listing parameter, result, unit and method, with MDL and RL where the laboratory provides them. For Plus and Lake Admin subscribers, results load to the Data Library and signed reports to Documents & Reports; Member and Basic subscribers receive them by email.
  • Lab results are the record of reference. Use the weekly readings to see when and where nitrogen moves between lab dates.

Pro tips

  • Pick one weekly spot and one day of the week, and keep them. Consistency is what makes a weekly series readable.
  • Upload handheld readings to the portal regularly, not once at season end. A monthly upload keeps the record current for your lake community.
  • Add a reading at your main inflow within a day or two of heavy rain. That is the nutrient pulse scheduled lab samples miss.
  • Around fall turnover, check ammonium at the deepest point you can reach. A jump means nutrients stored in the bottom water are mixing back up.
  • Hold the bloom voucher until you see a bloom. Sample the thickest visible area, and add a toxin test if people swim nearby.
  • Collect the season-start and season-end lab samples at the same spot so the two can be compared directly.
  • Lab timing, April–November: ice-out or spring turnover, early summer, midsummer, fall turnover. Year-round: dry-season baseline, pre-wet season, wet-season peak, end of wet season.

Results load to your lake's portal on Plus and Lake Admin; on Member and Basic, they are emailed to you.

About these results

Handheld readings describe the water at the place and time each test was run. Lakes change with weather, season and location, so a single reading does not represent the whole lake. Readings use single-use test strips and are intended for frequent tracking of trends between laboratory tests. A non-detection is not proof of absence.

Lab results are produced by an independent accredited partner laboratory and are the record of reference; where a handheld reading and a lab result differ, rely on the lab. MDL and RL are reported as provided by the laboratory and are never estimated.

Results can help you make decisions about safe swimming and water use, but no result is definitive for every place and time. It is always good practice to check posted signs and your state or local health authorities.
