The northern snakehead has a nickname problem. "Frankenfish" makes for good television, and the fish does have a genuinely strange trick — it breathes air, survives out of water for days if it stays damp, and can move short distances across wet ground. But the sensational framing has an unhelpful side effect. It makes the snakehead sound like a monster movie rather than a management problem, and monster movies do not come with a checklist.

This is the checklist.

Why this particular fish is hard to stop

Most invasive species need a specific set of conditions to establish. The northern snakehead needs very little. It is native to China, Korea, and parts of Russia, and it arrived in the United States carrying a combination of traits that make it close to ideal for invasion:

- **It breathes air.** A specialized organ above the gills lets it pull oxygen directly from the atmosphere. That means it tolerates low-oxygen water that would kill most predatory fish — exactly the warm, weedy, stagnant conditions common in shallow lake margins, coves, and connected ponds in late summer.
- **It survives transport.** As long as it stays moist, it can live out of water for several days. A fish moved in a bucket, a livewell, or the bottom of a boat is not necessarily a dead fish.
- **It eats broadly and breeds fast.** Fish, frogs, crayfish. It matures quickly and produces large numbers of young.
- **It has no natural enemies here.** Nothing in a North American lake evolved to control it.

The practical consequence: a single illegal release can seed an entire connected watershed. This is not a fish that needs a sustained introduction pressure to take hold.

Where it has taken hold

Federal biologists consider the northern snakehead established in seven states. The fronts worth knowing:

**The Potomac and the Chesapeake.** Ground zero. Fish appeared in the Potomac around 2004 and spread through its creeks and into wider Chesapeake tributaries. This is the largest and most studied population in the country. Maryland's response has been notably pragmatic — in 2024 the state officially rebranded the fish as "Chesapeake Channa" to encourage people to eat it, and thousands of pounds are now removed from the watershed annually.

**The Delaware watershed.** A genetically separate population centered on the Philadelphia area, spanning Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, including city lakes at FDR Park. This front arrived independently of the Chesapeake invasion.

**Eastern Arkansas and the Mississippi basin.** The one that concerns biologists most. A population established itself in the irrigation canals of Arkansas rice country and has worked into the broader Mississippi system. Because the Mississippi connects an enormous share of the continent, this is the population with genuine long-range spread potential.

**New York.** The first state record came from Meadow Lake in Queens in 2005. Another population later established upstate, including Ridgebury Lake in Orange County, and genetic work has identified two distinct populations in the Hudson basin — evidence of more than one introduction.

Florida belongs on the map with an asterisk. Its established invader is a different species entirely: the bullseye snakehead, firmly entrenched in the canals of Broward County and the surrounding southeast.

If your lake sits in a watershed connected to any of these, you are downstream of a known source. If it does not, your primary risk is not water — it is people.

How to identify one

Snakeheads are routinely confused with two fish that belong here. Getting this right matters, because the recommended response to a snakehead is lethal and the recommended response to a bowfin is not.

**Northern snakehead:** Long, cylindrical, torpedo-shaped body. Mottled brown and tan blotching. The giveaway is the fin arrangement — a very long dorsal fin running most of the length of the back, and a long anal fin running much of the belly. Large mouth, prominent teeth, flattened head with a snake-like look from above. Pelvic fins present.

**Bowfin (native, leave it alone):** Similar long dorsal fin, which is where the confusion starts. But the anal fin is short. Bowfin also have a bony plate under the lower jaw, and males often show a dark eyespot near the tail. Bowfin are a native species with a legitimate role in the system.

**Northern pike (native in much of its range):** Duckbill snout, short dorsal fin set far back near the tail, light markings on a dark body rather than dark blotches on light.

The single most reliable field check is the anal fin. Long anal fin plus long dorsal fin plus no gular plate under the jaw means take a photograph before you do anything else.

What to do if you catch one

State agency guidance across the affected region is consistent:

1. **Do not release it.** Kill the fish.
2. **Photograph it** — whole body, side profile, in good light, with something for scale.
3. **Record the location** as precisely as you can. GPS coordinates if available, otherwise a clear description of the cove, access point, or shoreline segment.
4. **Report it to your state fish and wildlife agency.** Every affected state has a reporting channel, and most now have a dedicated invasive species line or form.
5. **Never move a live snakehead** between water bodies, and never dump aquarium fish into local water. Both are how new fronts start.

The eating recommendation is not a joke, incidentally. It is good table fish, and encouraging harvest is currently one of the few tools that works at scale.

The detection problem nobody talks about

Here is the uncomfortable part. Every one of those established populations was discovered the same way — somebody caught a fish and reported it. In Arkansas, a single fish found in a drainage ditch in 2008 led biologists to realize a population had *already* established itself across the surrounding canal network.

Angler reports are a lagging indicator. By the time a snakehead is common enough to be caught by chance, it has usually been reproducing for years. That gap between arrival and detection is where eradication stops being possible and containment becomes the only remaining option.

This is a general truth about aquatic invasives, not a snakehead peculiarity. Zebra mussels, hydrilla, starry stonewort — the pattern repeats. The species is visible when it is abundant, and abundant is too late.

Molecular water sampling is the current answer to this problem. Environmental DNA and RNA methods detect genetic material shed into the water by organisms that are present but not yet visible, at densities far below what netting or angling would find. The technology is mature enough that state and federal agencies use it routinely for early detection of high-priority invaders. It is not a substitute for surveillance by the people who use the lake — it is the thing that gives those people a reason to look before there is anything obvious to see.

What a lake association can do this season

Regardless of whether a molecular program is in your budget:

- **Post identification material at every ramp and access point.** Snakehead, bowfin, pike, side by side. Most misidentification is solvable with a laminated sheet.
- **Know your state's reporting channel before you need it,** and put it on the same sign.
- **Enforce clean-drain-dry** at your access points, and treat live-well and bait-bucket transfer as the real vector it is.
- **Log your reports.** If a member catches something unusual, that observation should end up somewhere durable — with a date, a location, and a photograph — not in a group text that scrolls away. A record of what has *not* been found is as valuable as a record of what has.
- **Know your connections.** Map which inlets, outlets, canals, and seasonal high-water paths link your lake to other water. Those are your entry points, and they do not change year to year.

Safety is a snapshot. Health is a trend. The same logic that applies to nutrient loading and bacteria applies to invasive species: a single observation tells you about one afternoon, and only an accumulated record tells you what is actually happening to your lake.
