A fifty-year record from a black-and-white disc beats three years from a sensor that cost four figures.

In 1865, a papal astronomer named Angelo Secchi lowered a white disc into the Mediterranean to see how deep it stayed visible. The instrument has not meaningfully changed since. It is a plate, about eight inches across, painted in black and white quarters, on a marked rope.

It costs less than a tank of fuel. It is still one of the most valuable things a lake community can own, and the reason is not the plate.

What it actually measures

You lower it until it disappears, note the depth, raise it until it reappears, note that, and average the two. That is your Secchi depth.

What you have measured is water clarity — how far light penetrates before scattering and absorption make the disc invisible. In most lakes, clarity is driven mainly by suspended algae, which makes Secchi depth a rough proxy for algal biomass, which makes it a rough proxy for how much nutrient your lake is running on.

Rough is the operative word. Sediment from a storm reduces clarity without any algae involved. Tannins from a wetland tint water dark regardless of biology. A Secchi reading is not a measurement of lake health, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling it.

Why it matters anyway

Because of the one thing no sensor can give you: fifty years.

Almost everything meaningful in lake science is a comparison across time. Is this year worse than last year. Is the trend improving. Did the thing we did in 2019 make a difference. Those questions require a long, consistent, uninterrupted record — and consistency matters more than precision.

A slightly imprecise measurement taken the same way, at the same place, every two weeks, for four decades, is worth vastly more than a highly accurate measurement taken twice. Volunteers with Secchi discs have produced some of the longest continuous water quality records in North America. No funded programme has that kind of persistence, because funding does not persist and volunteers do.

How to not ruin your own data

The failure mode is inconsistency, and it is easy to fall into.

Same location, marked on a map, ideally over the deepest point. Same person if possible, since eyesight varies. Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., because sun angle changes the reading. On the shaded side of the boat, without sunglasses. Every two weeks through the open season, not whenever someone remembers.

Write down the date, the depth, the weather, and who took it. A reading with no context is very nearly a reading with no value.

Where it stops working

Be clear about the limits. Secchi cannot tell you whether a bloom is toxic. It cannot detect bacteria, nutrients, chloride, or anything dissolved. In a shallow lake it hits bottom and stops being informative. In a tannic lake it reflects dissolved colour more than algae.

It tells you one thing, imperfectly, very cheaply, forever. That is the whole offer.

The argument this is really about

There is a temptation, when a lake community finally gets serious, to buy the most sophisticated thing available. Sensors, buoys, telemetry. Those tools are genuinely valuable and they answer questions a disc cannot.

But they answer them starting from the day you install them. If nobody has been watching your lake for the last twenty years, the expensive equipment cannot recover that. The plate could have.

Start the boring measurement now. In fifteen years it becomes the most valuable dataset your lake owns, and it will have cost almost nothing.
