Regulations, compliance & grants
“Rules, permits, and grant deadlines rarely arrive at a convenient time. Whether it’s urgent or a year out, Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can ask me and get a straight answer.”

The Boathouse
A help desk, not a consultancy: career lake people answering in plain English, with your lake's record already at their fingertips.
Who can use the Boathouse
Members and Basic subscribers are welcome to reach out through the Contact us form, but responses may not be as in-depth.
Who answers
Think of the Boathouse as doctors on call for your lake. Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can bring us an urgent question or a longer-term strategic issue and get support from someone who already has their lake's record open.

Regulations, compliance & grants
“Rules, permits, and grant deadlines rarely arrive at a convenient time. Whether it’s urgent or a year out, Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can ask me and get a straight answer.”

Data wrangling & analytics
“Send me the messy spreadsheet, the missing year, or the question you can’t get the data to answer. Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can hand it over and I’ll help make the record useful again.”

Testing & monitoring options
“What to test, when to sample, which tool actually fits — Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can ask me before spending a dollar. I’m here for today’s decision and next season’s approach.”

Drone surveys & aerial mapping
“Sometimes a flight answers the question and sometimes it won’t. I’ll tell you which, whether you need a survey next week or a plan for the whole season, and that help is here for Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers.”

Field tools & testing gear
“Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can bring me a field routine that broke down or gear they’re weighing for next year. I’ll help match tools to your crew, your water, and your budget.”

Real-time & in-situ monitoring
“Where to put a sensor is the easy part; keeping the data trustworthy is the work. Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can walk through either with me, urgent or long-range.”

Treatment options & next steps
“Before your lake commits to a treatment, check the evidence. Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can call on me for that, whether the decision is this week or three budgets out.”
Each individual in the Lake Pulse Boathouse is passionate about helping Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers with urgent questions and longer-term strategic issues. We are a help desk, not a consultancy, and we do not sell consulting services. We do not publish résumés here because access to objective guidance is part of the Lake Pulse service. Our team brings decades of experience in limnology, testing & monitoring, lake management & remediation, and data science.
We speak lake
We help get testing, monitoring, survey, and report data out of historic PDFs and spreadsheets and into your Lake Pulse Portal.
Not sure what to buy? We help you figure out which testing or monitoring solutions meet your lake's financial, operational, and strategic goals.
Not sure what the data means? We help you read your results and explain them in plain English your neighbors and board will understand.
We'll connect you with our network of limnologists, ecologists, environmental engineers, lawyers, and other consultants when the problem calls for one.
Seeking grants or philanthropic support for your lake's health and safety goals? Let the Boathouse point you at the right doors.
Any question about your lake's health and safety. No question is too small, and chances are another lake has already asked it.
Where the line sits
The Boathouse does not sell consulting services. Asking for guidance is included with Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers. Separate, hands-on Lake Pulse work may carry a clearly stated fee, but it is scoped in writing before anything starts.
Included with a subscription
Included for Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers.
Quoted as a flat fee
Decades of PDFs, binders, and spreadsheets digitized, cleaned, and loaded into your Portal. Scoped and quoted by volume.
Board packets, grant exhibits, and multi-year trend analyses built to your specification rather than pulled from the standard templates.
A site-by-site, season-by-season sampling approach for your lake, written up so volunteers can repeat it year after year.
When a specialist is required, we scope the work, run the introduction, and stay in the loop. The specialist bills their own rate.
Every engagement is scoped and priced before work begins. No hourly billing, no retainers, no surprise invoices.
For every lake
Already have a consultant?
Lakes that already have a trusted lake consultant should keep that relationship. You can also invite that consultant into your Lake Pulse Portal as a co-admin, so they see the same data, notes, and timeline the Boathouse sees. In many cases, your consultant and the Boathouse can work together — the Boathouse becomes an extension of your team, not a replacement.
Smaller lakes
The Boathouse exists for all types of lakes, but it is especially helpful for smaller lakes that can't afford a dedicated consultant. You still get plain-English answers, guidance on testing and monitoring, and help interpreting results — without signing a retainer or hiring a full-time lake expert.
Treatment options
John helps subscribers look at treatment options with an independent eye. Lake Pulse does not remediate lakes and we do not sell treatments — verification today is bespoke and expensive, sourced from regional consultancies on long contracts — so we have no product to push and no reason to talk you into an expensive fix. We help you gather the data, run the numbers, and confirm the problem is real before you spend money on a solution.
Quantify before you treat. Phosphorus, chlorophyll-a, cyanotoxins, bacteria, and eDNA give you defensible numbers that show whether the problem matches the sales pitch.
Catch the gap between a vendor's snapshot and your lake's actual behavior. Overnight turns, stratification events, and bloom spikes often tell a very different story than a single sample.
Turn scattered readings into a board-ready timeline. See the trend, the seasonality, and the real scope — so you can ask "How do we know?" and get an answer backed by evidence.

Treatment options & next steps
“Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscribers can bring me an urgent next-step question or a strategic treatment decision. I'm here to help you check the evidence before your lake commits.”
Before you ask
Most of what subscribers ask has been written up already — eDNA sampling, grab sample vs. buoy vs. satellite, what monitoring actually tells you, and the first ten steps as a Lake Admin.

Is it a consultancy? What does access cost, and what carries a fee? How fast do we reply? Can Members use it? All of it is written up in the FAQ.
