Alkalinity & Hardness Test

Your lake's buffering capacity — and the number that decides whether alum is safe here.

$88

Checkout arrives with the store connection. Orders attach to the lake on your account.

Overview

Your lake's buffering capacity — how much acid it can absorb before pH starts to move, and how much calcium and magnesium are in the water.

This is the number that determines whether an alum treatment is viable and at what dose. Low-alkalinity lakes can be pushed into a pH crash by a treatment sized for a hard-water lake. Get this before anyone quotes you a chemical job.

What problem does this solve for our lake?

  • Alkalinity is how much acid your lake can absorb before its pH starts to move. Hardness is how much calcium and magnesium the water carries. Neither is something residents notice, which is why most lakes have never measured them — and why they are the two numbers most often missing when a treatment decision is on the table.
  • They matter most at the moment somebody proposes a chemical application. Alum works by acidifying the water column enough to bind phosphorus. In a well-buffered lake that is routine. In a soft-water, low-alkalinity lake, a dose sized for hard water can push pH low enough to kill fish. The dose is not a property of the treatment; it is a property of your lake, and this is the measurement that establishes it.
  • There is a second use that outlives any single treatment. Alkalinity and hardness describe your lake's geology and its sensitivity to acid deposition. Lakes with low buffering capacity respond faster to everything — acid rain, road salt, watershed change — and knowing you are one of them changes how you read every other result you will ever collect.

What's included?

  • A complete test kit shipped directly to you
  • All materials required for clean, contamination-free sample collection
  • Step-by-step collection and preservation instructions
  • Prepaid 2-day return shipping to our accredited partner laboratory
  • Analysis for total alkalinity, total hardness, calcium, and magnesium by EPA-approved methods at an accredited partner laboratory, with full chain of custody
  • Results loaded automatically into your lake's account

What's not included

  • Sample collection. You collect the sample; we supply everything you need to do it correctly.
  • Boat, dock, or shoreline access to your sampling site
  • Ice or a cooler for shipping, which you supply
  • An alum dose calculation. This test supplies a required input; the dose itself is an applicator's engineering determination.
  • pH, which moves too quickly to survive shipping and should be measured in the field
  • Phosphorus. Buffering capacity tells you whether a treatment is safe, not whether it is warranted.
  • Depth-profile sampling. This is a single grab sample unless you order multiple kits.
  • Treatment, remediation, or applicator services

Requirements

  • A sample collected from open water at a consistent depth, typically just below the surface
  • Same-day shipment after collection
  • A consistent sampling location if you intend to track this over time
  • A Plus, Lake Admin, or PRO subscription to have results loaded into your Lake Pulse account
  • Questions about site selection, timing, or which test fits your lake? Contact the Lake Pulse Boathouse before you order.
What you get back

Results

  • Total alkalinity reported in mg/L as CaCO3
  • Total hardness, calcium, and magnesium reported in mg/L
  • The buffering baseline any applicator will need before quoting a chemical treatment
  • An indicator of your lake's sensitivity to acid deposition and watershed change
  • Results load automatically into your lake's Data Library in the Lake Pulse Portal
  • Data can be charted in the Analytics Hub, used to trigger alerts, or shared with your board and members
  • A downloadable, signed lab report is filed in your lake's Documents & Reports for permanent reference
  • Results are found in your lake's portal, accessible only to Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscription tiers

Pro tips

  • Run this before you accept a treatment quote, not after. An applicator sizing a dose without your alkalinity number is estimating from regional averages.
  • Under roughly 20 mg/L as CaCO3 is a poorly buffered lake. That is the range where a standard alum dose becomes a real risk and where a two-stage buffered application is usually required.
  • Alkalinity is seasonally stable. Unlike nutrients or chlorophyll, one good measurement holds for years unless your watershed changes materially.
  • Hardness explains zebra and quagga mussel risk. Calcium below about 12 mg/L makes shell formation difficult, and that is a useful thing to know before you spend money on invasive monitoring.
  • Pair it with chloride. Both are conservative watershed indicators, they ship in the same box, and together they describe what your catchment is delivering.
  • Do not substitute a field pH meter. pH tells you where the lake is right now; alkalinity tells you how far it can be pushed.

About these results

Every result shows the date and time the sample was collected. Results reflect one sample, collected at a specific place and depth, and analyzed by an independent accredited laboratory using the method listed on this page. Lake conditions change across a lake and over time, sometimes within hours, in ways a single sample may not capture. Every method has detection and reporting limits; where the laboratory provides them, they are reported with your results. A detection is not a diagnosis, and a non-detection does not prove absence. Results are not a regulatory or compliance determination unless the agency involved accepts them as one. Results can help you make decisions about safe swimming and water use, but no result is definitive for every place and time. It is always good practice to check posted signs and your state or local health authorities. Recommendations are options to consider; decisions, and responsibility for any action taken, rest with you.
