Overview

A scheduled half hour with the Lake Pulse Boathouse — the team that reads lake data for a living.

Bring a result you do not understand, a decision you are stuck on, a consultant's proposal you want a second opinion on, or a board that wants an answer you are not sure how to give. You will get a straight one.

This is deliberately not a sales call. The most common outcome is being told which of the tests you were considering you do not need.

When to use it

What problem does this solve for our lake?

Lake management has an expertise gap in the middle. There is free advice, which is generic, and there are consultants, who are excellent and start at several thousand dollars with a scope of work attached. Between them sits the ordinary situation: a volunteer board with a result in hand, a proposal on the table, and a decision due next month. The questions this call answers well: • "We got these results back. Is this normal, and does it mean we should do something?" • "A contractor has quoted us for an alum treatment. Is that the right intervention for what our data shows?" • "We have $8,000 for monitoring this year. What should we spend it on?" • "Our board wants to know why the lake is worse. What would actually tell us?" • "We have ten years of volunteer data nobody has analysed. Is there anything in it?" The most valuable outcome is often subtractive. Lake associations routinely plan monitoring programmes two or three times more expensive than the question requires, and half an hour is usually enough to find that out.

What's included?

  • minutes of scheduled time with a Lake Pulse water specialist
  • Review of whatever you send ahead — lab results, monitoring data, a consultant's proposal, historical records
  • Straight answers on what your data shows and what it does not
  • Guidance on which Toolbox products fit your question, including which ones do not
  • A short written summary of what was discussed and recommended, filed to your lake's portal

What's not included

  • A written management plan, engineering design, or treatment specification. Those are consulting deliverables with a scope of work.
  • Regulatory or legal determinations
  • Laboratory analysis, which is ordered separately
  • Ongoing advisory support. This is a single scheduled call, not a standing relationship.
  • A guarantee we will agree with your consultant. Sometimes we will not, and that is usually why the call was worth booking.

Requirements

  • Send your materials at least 48 hours ahead. Half an hour spent reading your data live is half an hour not spent discussing it.
  • A specific question. "Is our lake healthy" produces a worse call than "our July phosphorus doubled and we want to know if that is the sediment."
  • A Plus, Lake Admin, or PRO subscription to have the summary and any recommendations filed into your lake's account
  • Whoever will act on the answer, on the call. Relaying a technical conversation to a board second-hand loses most of it.
What you get back

Results

  • A direct answer to the question you brought, from someone who reads lake data for a living
  • A clear next step, which is frequently "do nothing yet, and here is what to watch"
  • An independent read on a consultant's proposal before you commit to it
  • A written summary filed to your lake's Data Sources for permanent reference
  • Data can be charted in the Analytics Hub, used to trigger alerts, or shared with your board and members
  • Results are found in your lake's portal, accessible only to Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscription tiers

Pro tips

  • Book it before you spend, not after. The cheapest thing the Boathouse does is talk a lake out of a test it did not need — and that happens on maybe a third of these calls.
  • Bring the proposal, not the summary of the proposal. Contractor scopes contain the detail that matters, and the price is rarely the important part.
  • Old data counts. A decade of volunteer Secchi readings in a shoebox is often the most valuable thing a lake owns and the least likely to have been looked at.
  • Ask what you should stop doing. Most lakes have at least one line item that is habit rather than strategy.

Lake Pulse sells measurement and monitoring — not treatment or remediation. What you buy here positions you to solve the problem, and to prove whether it worked.
