Overview

Lake Tag is a pocket-sized Bluetooth button that logs a georeferenced observation on your lake's Lake Pulse map with a single press. No app to open, no form to fill out, no photograph required.

It pairs to the Lake Pulse app over Bluetooth and stays connected in the background. Press it, and the location and time are recorded.

When to use it

What problem does this solve for our lake?

The most valuable observations on a lake are made by people who are not monitoring it. Someone notices discolouration off the point, a dead fish, a plume behind a boat, weeds where there were none last year — and then does nothing, because doing something means stopping, unlocking a phone, opening an app, and filling in a form while the boat drifts. Almost all of that information is lost. Not because people do not care, but because the friction is higher than the moment is worth. A button removes the friction entirely. What you get in exchange is coverage no monitoring programme can buy: hundreds of observations from people who are on the water anyway, each one timestamped and placed on the map.

What's included?

  • Lake Tag Bluetooth smart button
  • Single-press georeferenced observation logging to your lake's Lake Pulse map
  • Background pairing with the Lake Pulse app — no need to open anything
  • Subscription options selected at checkout
  • Observations appear on your lake's map for the community to see

What's not included

  • A smartphone, which you supply, running the Lake Pulse app
  • Descriptions or photographs. A press records where and when, not what — add detail later in the app if you want it.
  • Water quality measurement of any kind
  • Verification of what was observed

Requirements

  • A smartphone with Bluetooth and the Lake Pulse app installed
  • The app permitted to run in the background, which is what makes single-press logging work
  • A Lake Pulse account
What you get back

Results

  • Georeferenced, timestamped observations on your lake's map
  • Spatial patterns emerging from many observations over a season
  • A way for the wider lake community to contribute without training
  • Context for interpreting test results — knowing where people noticed something is often what tells you where to sample

Pro tips

  • Buy them in bulk and hand them out. One button on one boat produces anecdotes; thirty across the lake produce a map.
  • Brief people on what to press for. "Anything that looks wrong" is enough, but say it out loud or the buttons go unused.
  • Press first, describe later. The whole design premise is that the moment passes quickly.
  • Clusters are the signal. Individual presses are noise; five in the same bay in a week is where you sample.
  • Give them to fishermen and early risers. They are on the water at dawn, which is when blooms and fish kills are most visible.

Lake Pulse sells measurement and monitoring — not treatment or remediation. What you buy here positions you to solve the problem, and to prove whether it worked.
