This test counts E. coli and total coliform bacteria in colony-forming units per 100 mL using Standard Method 9223B. E. coli is the indicator organism public health agencies use nationwide to judge recreational water safety, because it lives in the intestines of warm-blooded animals and its presence means fecal material has reached the water. Total coliform is the broader group, useful for detecting general contamination and decaying organic matter. This is the test behind beach advisories and closures.

Nobody can look at a lake and tell whether it is safe to swim in. Bacterial contamination is invisible, it spikes and clears within days, and the sources are usually things nobody wants to think about: a failing septic system, a stormwater outfall after heavy rain, a large gull or goose population, agricultural runoff, or a boat discharging waste. E. coli itself rarely makes people sick at the levels found in lakes. It matters because it travels with the organisms that do — the bacteria, viruses, and protozoa in fecal material that cause gastrointestinal illness, skin infections, and ear and eye infections. Counting E. coli is how you detect the presence of that whole category without testing for each pathogen individually. For orientation, the U.S. EPA recommended criterion for recreational freshwater is a geometric mean of 126 CFU per 100 mL, with a single-sample threshold commonly set around 235 CFU per 100 mL. Your state or county may set different numbers, and the applicable standard is theirs, not ours. Two things make this test genuinely useful for a lake community. First, it converts an argument into a number — beach signage, swim advisories, and conversations with a health department all require a count, not a concern. Second, sampled repeatedly at several sites, it points to sources: bacteria that spike at one shoreline location after rain and nowhere else is telling you something specific about that shoreline.
