Overview

What problem does this solve for our lake?

• Nobody can look at a lake and tell whether it is safe to swim in. Bacterial contamination is invisible, it spikes and clears within days, and the sources are usually things nobody wants to think about: a failing septic system, a stormwater outfall after heavy rain, a large gull or goose population, agricultural runoff, or a boat discharging waste.
• E. coli itself rarely makes people sick at the levels found in lakes. It matters because it travels with the organisms that do — the bacteria, viruses, and protozoa in fecal material that cause gastrointestinal illness, skin infections, and ear and eye infections. Counting E. coli is how you detect the presence of that whole category without testing for each pathogen individually.
• For orientation, the U.S. EPA recommended criterion for recreational freshwater is a geometric mean of 126 per 100 mL, with a single-sample threshold commonly set around 235 per 100 mL. These criteria apply to counts by either CFU or MPN methods. Your state or county may set different numbers, and the applicable standard is theirs, not ours.
• Two things make this test genuinely useful for a lake community. First, it converts an argument into a number — beach signage, swim advisories, and conversations with a health department all require a count, not a concern. Second, sampled repeatedly at several sites, it points to sources: bacteria that spike at one shoreline location after rain and nowhere else is telling you something specific about that shoreline.

• Source identification. This tells you bacteria are present, not whose they are. Microbial source tracking is a separate analysis.
• Enterococcus, the indicator used for marine and some freshwater beach programs
• Regulatory certification of a beach. Official advisories are issued by your local health authority.
• Viruses, protozoa, or specific pathogens

Requirements

• READ THIS FIRST — bacteria samples have a short holding time, which is why this kit ships back 1-day rather than 2-day. Standard methods allow a maximum of 24 hours between collection and analysis for informational monitoring. Collect in the morning, get the sample to the carrier the same day, and 1-day return keeps you inside that window.
• If you need a result for an official beach advisory, closure, or regulatory submission, the applicable window is tighter — commonly 6 hours — and no shipped sample can meet it. That requires a certified local lab. Contact the Lake Pulse Boathouse and we will help you find one in your area.
• A sterile container, filled without rinsing and without touching the inside of the container or cap
