This is the broad modern-chemistry panel: roughly 140 fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, and growth regulators screened by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, reported in parts per billion. It covers the compounds in current agricultural and residential use — neonicotinoids, strobilurin and triazole fungicides, carbamates, organophosphates, and modern herbicides. Pesticides reach lakes constantly and invisibly. They arrive in runoff from farm fields, golf courses, and treated lawns; they drift in from nearby spraying; they wash off hard surfaces in the first hour of a storm. At the concentrations typically found they will not sicken a swimmer, but they can measurably damage the food web your fishery depends on — and nobody looks for them, so nobody finds them. The panel covers eight functional groups, each with a distinct consequence: - Carbamates and organophosphates both work by disrupting nerve signaling in insects, and both are acutely toxic to fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates at low concentrations. These are the compounds behind most pesticide-linked fish kills. - Neonicotinoids are systemic insecticides that are highly water-soluble and persistent, which is exactly the combination that carries them into lakes and keeps them there. They are severely toxic to aquatic insects — the mayflies, caddisflies, and midges that young fish eat. - Herbicides do not poison fish directly. They kill aquatic plants, and losing native plants means losing habitat, losing oxygen production, and often opening the door for algae to take the nutrients the plants were using. - Fungicides affect the microbial and fungal communities that decompose organic matter in sediment, and several are directly toxic to invertebrates. Many persist in sediment for years. - Insect growth regulators disrupt development rather than killing outright, which makes their effect on the food web slower and easier to miss. The unifying risk is not acute poisoning. It is chronic, low-level pressure on the bottom of the food web, which shows up years later as a fishery that is not what it used to be and nobody can explain why.
