Overview

LakeTemp is a compact dock-mounted sensor that tracks surface water temperature hourly, all season. It clamps onto a dock post in minutes with no tools, uploads automatically over Wi-Fi or a base station, and runs all season on batteries.

At $150 it is the lowest-cost entry point in the Toolbox, and the readings are visible to the whole lake community rather than one household.

A monitoring subscription is available from $84/yr ($7/mo).

When to use it

What problem does this solve for our lake?

Temperature drives almost everything else in a lake. Fish habitat, dissolved oxygen saturation, plant growth, stratification, and bloom risk are all downstream of it. It is also the easiest variable to measure and the one most lakes have no record of at all. Without a continuous record, every explanation is retrospective and unfalsifiable — the fish kill was "a hot year," the algae was "a warm spring." With one, you have a leading indicator and, after a few seasons, a baseline that makes an unusual year identifiable as it happens rather than in hindsight. There is a second effect worth naming, because it is the reason this product outperforms its price. Checking the lake temperature is something people already do, informally, with a foot off the dock. Turning that into a live number the whole association can see gives a lake community a daily reason to look at its own data. Engagement is the hardest part of any volunteer monitoring programme, and this is the cheapest thing that produces it.

What's included?

  • LakeTemp sensor with wireless temperature tracking
  • Hourly surface temperature readings through the season
  • Dock-post mounting, tool-free, installed in minutes
  • Automatic data upload over Wi-Fi or base station
  • Online dashboard viewable from phone or any device
  • Community data sharing, so the whole lake association sees the same reading
  • All-season battery operation
  • Data flows up to the Lake Pulse cloud and back down into your lake's account, where it can be charted in the Analytics Hub, used to trigger alerts, and shared with your board and members
  • A monitoring subscription is available from $84/yr ($7/mo).

What's not included

  • Installation. It takes minutes and no tools, but you mount it.
  • A dock post or equivalent fixed mounting point
  • Temperature at depth. This is a surface measurement — the stratification profile requires a buoy.
  • Water quality of any kind
  • Winter operation. Season use, removed before ice-in.
  • Treatment, remediation, or applicator services

Requirements

  • A dock post or fixed mounting point at a location representative of the lake, not a shallow sun-trap
  • Wi-Fi or base station coverage at the dock
  • The same position each season, so year-over-year readings compare
  • Removal before ice-in
  • A Plus, Lake Admin, or PRO subscription. Syncing a real-time device to a Lake Pulse account requires one of these tiers.
  • Contact the Lake Pulse Boathouse if you have questions.
What you get back

Results

  • Real-time surface temperature, viewable from anywhere
  • Hourly readings building a continuous seasonal record
  • A year-over-year baseline that makes an unusual season identifiable while it is happening
  • Shared visibility across the lake association — one number everyone can see
  • After a few seasons, enough history to flag conditions that precede harmful algae
  • Data flows up to the Lake Pulse cloud and back down into your lake's account, where it can be charted in the Analytics Hub, used to trigger alerts, and shared with your board and members
  • Results are found in your lake's portal, accessible only to Plus, Lake Admin, and PRO subscription tiers

Pro tips

  • Do not mount it in a shallow sunny corner. A sun-trap near shore reads several degrees above the lake and makes the whole record misleading.
  • Same post, same depth, every season. The value is comparability, and it is easy to lose for no reason.
  • This is the right first purchase for a lake with no monitoring at all. It costs $150, it needs no expertise, and it gets people looking at lake data daily.
  • Pair it with a weather station before pairing it with anything else. Air temperature, wind, and solar radiation explain what the water temperature is doing.
  • Surface temperature is not the stratification story. If the question is about oxygen at depth or internal loading, this is not the instrument.
  • Take it in before ice. It is the most common way a $150 sensor becomes a $150 lesson.

Lake Pulse sells measurement and monitoring — not treatment or remediation. What you buy here positions you to solve the problem, and to prove whether it worked.
